Matthew 13:11,13,16“ … it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given … therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand … but blessed are your eyes for they see and your ears for they hear.” Jesus conveyed many spiritual truths through stories, called parables, to help people understand better what He was trying to say.
2 Timothy 4:13“Bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas when you come--and the books , especially the parchments.” The Apostle Paul wrote asking Timothy to bring his books to him. Books are important to us. A character in the movie Shadowlands said, “We read to know we’re not alone.”
Author J. R. R. Tolkien pointed out a tree to his writer friend, C. S. Lewis, saying, “Look! There it stands, its feet in the earth, its head among the stars. A majestic miracle of creation! And what do we call it? A tree. The word falls absurdly short of expressing the thing itself.”
“Of course it does,” replied Lewis. “Like any word, it’s just a verbal invention, a symbol of our own poor devising.”
“Exactly,” replied Tolkien. “And here’s my point: Just as a word is an invention about an object or an idea, so a story can be an invention about Truth.”
